About Weavewood, Inc.
About Weavewood
Weavewood®, Inc was founded 1947 by Howard H. Thompson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota as a result of the health department's ban on wooden bowls in local restaurants. Mr. Thompson believed that a bowl could be made of wood and still meet the sanitation guidelines. A unique formulation and manufacturing process was developed after working closely with chemists for many years. It is a process that has changed very little in 55 years. The product was patented and the name Weavewood® became a registered trademark.
Weavewood®'s first product was a single bowl. There was no choice of size, shape or wood. It was produced at company headquarters in a small, dark, second floor warehouse on University Avenue in Minneapolis. Today there are more than 916 products available, but that same bowl remains the number one seller in the line. The products are now produced in a 30,000 square foot modern factory located in Golden Valley.
Weavewood® has designed and manufactured custom products for many clients including: Land O'Lakes, Pepperidge Farms, Ryan's Family Steak Houses, General Mills, Swanson Foods, Pizza Inn, the Playboy Resorts, Nordic Ware, Kraft Foods, and the United States Army. Weavewood®'s products are sold in every major department store in the United States and to a diverse market including: restaurants, the military, the advertising industry, institutions, and directly to consumers through catalogs.
Weavewood® has been a family owned business since the beginning. All four of the Thompson children, and several of the grandchildren have participated in the operation of the factory founded by Howard H. Thompson. An exceptionally loyal and hard working crew, many with more than 30 years of service have also been a key to success in keeping the business in continuous operation.
Times change, things come and go but the one thing that has been continuous is the original Weavewood® quality. Quality products made by people who are proud of what they produce have always been the Weavewood® legacy.
Trademark Info
Weavewood® is a registered trademark, your guarantee of unsurpassed quality in dishwasher-safe woodenware. Unfortunately, over the years, the protected name of Weavewood® has been misused to describe inferior products of similar construction, much like the trade names of Jello®, Kleenex®, Xerox®, and Scotch®. Weavewood® has always protected its trademark, and continues to educate people about the differences between Weavewood® and the cheap knock-offs. Nearly all genuine Weavewood® products have a circle with the words "Weavewood Inc. Minneapolis" molded right into the bottom of them.
Weavewood® was founded in 1947 by Howard Thompson, Sr. After 17 years, his patent ran out and Taiwan bombarded the American market with a vastly inferior imitation.
About Weavewood Products
WeaveWood products are hand-crafted from genuine hardwoods: American Walnut, Sugarberry, and Oak; African Mahogany, and Zebrawood. Custom woods and dyes are available upon request.
They are completely dishwasher safe both in home and commercial use, and are superior in strength and durability. We have smashed it on concrete and run over it repeatedly in our parking lot with a full size Hummer with NO DAMAGE to the product!
WeaveWood products will not warp, absorb oils or food odors in use, and have no "finish" to rub or flake off. The wood pores are saturated with a high grade FDA food approved melamine resin, creating a sealed, sanitary, and durable surface.
They are uniform in quality, construction, weight, thickness, and appearance, and have a special treated core that makes it so strong, you can kiss your breakage good-bye!
WeaveWood products have been tested and inspected by the US Food & Drug Administration - the FDA, and was found to "comply with the intent" of their provisions.
Certain products include 18/8 stainless steel and cast aluminum platters that will not burn their wooden under-liners.
